Sir Roy & Julia - The story of the makers
Sir Roy Strong CH was born in 1935 and educated at Edmonton County Grammar School and the University of London. He joined the National Portrait Gallery in 1959 and became its Director in 1967.
A prolific author, his books include the best selling Story of Britain (1996) and The Roy Strong Diaries 1967 to 1987 (1997) and more recently A Little History of the English Country Church (2007) and Visions of England (2011).
Julia Trevelyan Oman was born in 1930, a member of a distinguished intellectual family that included her grandfather, Sir Charles Oman, Chicheley Professor of Modern History at Oxford. Her training as a designer was at Wimbledon School of Art and at the Royal College from which she entered the BBC. She later had a distinguished career as a designer for films and the theatre with productions all over the world.
